Good Beta Readers Are Rare. Are You One?
Most readers finish a book and move on. Beta readers finish a book and sit with what didn’t work—and can articulate why.
That’s a specific skill. It’s also exactly what a manuscript needs before it goes anywhere near a launch date.
What beta readers do
Beta readers receive a complete or near-complete manuscript and read it as a whole. The feedback isn’t about line edits or typos—it’s about the larger experience. Does the argument hold? Does the structure support the reader through to the end? Are there sections where you checked out, and if so, when and why? Is the promised outcome actually delivered?
That’s the level of reading this requires.
What you get
A free advance copy of the manuscript before publication. Your name in the acknowledgments if you provide substantive feedback. And the genuine satisfaction of knowing the book that reaches readers is better because you were honest about the version that needed work.
Who this is for
Readers who have engaged with my content—my writing, my posts, my tutorials—and understand what the work is trying to do. Writers who are far enough along in their own practice to recognize structural problems when they encounter them. People who can commit to a realistic turnaround window and actually honor it. People who can be kind but constructive.
Who this isn’t for
Readers who want early access but can’t prioritize the follow-through. Anyone who conflates encouragement with feedback. Anyone who hasn’t read my work before and doesn’t have a baseline for what I’m building toward.
What the process looks like
Applications are reviewed in batches tied to specific manuscripts. If there’s no active beta round open, your application goes on file for the next one. You’ll receive a confirmation either way—no one gets left in the void wondering.
When a round opens, accepted beta readers receive the manuscript, a short feedback framework to work from, and a clear deadline. The framework isn’t a straitjacket—it’s a starting point for readers who aren’t sure how to structure their response.
